She looked at him, struggling to understand what was unfolding. He had arranged this entire elaborate night. He had picked the upscale restaurant. He had insisted on ordering the expensive wine.
He had been the one repeating all evening, “Tonight is going to be special.”
And now he expected her to pay one hundred ninety dollars?
It wasn’t the money that bothered her. She could easily afford her portion. That wasn’t the point.
“This just feels strange to me,” she said carefully, choosing her words. “You planned this whole evening for Valentine’s Day. Why would I need to pay for half of the special date you invited me to?”
His jaw tightened.
“This is about real partnership,” he said firmly. “We’re equals in this relationship, aren’t we?”
“Of course we are,” she answered. “But real partnership isn’t about splitting the cost of a surprise dinner you specifically planned for me.”
The mood at the table shifted instantly. The background music suddenly felt too loud, almost intrusive.
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke. They just looked at each other.

Then he made a small motion toward the server, who approached quietly.
He handed over his card without saying anything to her.
He paid the entire bill.
