“Our image?” Nathaniel repeated. “You mean yours.”
She stepped closer. “Think about what you’re doing. Canceling the wedding, humiliating me—it’ll be a scandal.”
Nathaniel didn’t move. “What would be a scandal is staying with someone who hurts my child.”
That night, Olivia packed under supervision. Nathaniel called his attorney, then his home security company, changing access codes and permissions. Olivia’s protests shifted from anger to panic.
“You can’t just erase me from your life,” she said, her voice cracking. “I helped you plan everything.”
“You helped yourself,” Nathaniel replied. “And you crossed a line you don’t get to walk back.”
By morning, Olivia was gone.
Over the next few days, the truth came out faster than Nathaniel expected. The nanny admitted Olivia had often dismissed Marcus’s feelings, scolded him harshly, and once locked him in his room as “punishment.” The housekeeper confessed she had considered quitting over Olivia’s behavior.
Nathaniel reported everything to his lawyer and a family counselor. Though no criminal charges were filed, a clear record was established. Olivia’s carefully maintained reputation began to crack as word spread quietly through their social circle.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel focused on Marcus. He took time off work, enrolling them both in counseling. At first, Marcus barely spoke. Then one evening, as they built a model airplane together, he whispered, “Did I do something bad?”
Nathaniel froze. “No,” he said firmly. “You did nothing wrong. Ever.”
Marcus looked up. “She said you’d stop loving me if I told.”
Nathaniel pulled him into a hug. “I will never stop loving you. And no one ever gets to hurt you again.”
The wedding was officially canceled two weeks later. Olivia tried once more to contact Nathaniel, leaving a long voicemail filled with apologies and justifications. He didn’t respond.
For Nathaniel, the cost was high—emotionally and socially—but the choice felt inevitable. Wealth had taught him many things, but fatherhood had taught him what truly mattered.
And for the first time since coming home early, he slept without regret.
