An office.

A routine.

A version of Daniel that belonged to someone else.

Lena sat in a plastic chair and listened.

And watched.

And remembered.

The surgery lasted four hours.

Four hours of silence, broken only by footsteps and distant announcements.

Four hours of unraveling.

By the time the doctor finally emerged, Lena felt like a different person.

“He’s stable,” the doctor said. “The injuries were serious, but he’s going to make it.”

Relief flooded the room.

Elise exhaled sharply, covering her mouth with her hand.

Lena didn’t move.

“Only immediate family can see him,” the doctor continued.

A pause.

And then, naturally, his eyes went to Elise.

“Come with me.”
