With every sentence, his confidence drained, his practiced smile replaced by panic.

When I finished, the silence was heavier than any applause. I ended by agreeing with him on one point alone: sometimes investments don’t pay off. My family had invested in him, and now everyone could see the return for themselves. This time, the laughter wasn’t directed at me.
