A job application by the roadside… and a life-changing offer

All she had asked for was a chance to work, just enough to fill a lunchbox again and provide a safe ride for her children. Yet, on that dusty stretch of federal highway, a simple « please » would trigger an offer she never could have imagined.

Adriana Montes had been waiting for hours on the roadside. The late afternoon sun wasn’t as intense as it had been at midday, but the heat remained heavy, clinging to the asphalt that undulated in the distance. Around her, there was only silence, vehicles passing without stopping, and the feeling of being invisible to the world.

At his feet lay two worn suitcases with frayed corners, a bag of haphazardly folded clothes, and an empty cooler, like a broken promise. In his pocket, a few coins clinked together, a harsh reminder of reality: enough for two tickets… and maybe a roll to share between three.

In times when everything is lacking, waiting becomes a burden that one carries with a smile, especially in front of one’s children.

— Mom… is the bus coming? asked Mateo, eight years old, his voice dry, worn by fatigue.

Five-year-old Lucía leaned against a suitcase and wrinkled her nose.

– I’m hungry…

Adriana felt her throat tighten, but she did what she had learned to do long ago: smile despite the inner storm.

— Soon, my loves. Just a little more patience.

The truth, however, was less reassuring. The bus hadn’t come today. Nor yesterday. Nor the days before. And the woman at the guesthouse, with her « wait here, my dear, it always comes through, » had sold her a hope as fragile as a wet paper ticket.

Then a different sound cut through the air: not the tired engine of an old minibus, but the crisp purr of an expensive, stable, self-assured car.

A black sedan braked in front of them, kicking up a cloud of dust. Adriana coughed and, instinctively, pulled Lucía close. The driver’s side window slowly rolled down.

A man in a dark, impeccable suit watched them. His expression was neither condescending nor pitying. It was something else: genuine concern, tinged with controlled anxiety.

  • A car that finally stops
  • Luggage that tells the story of a hasty departure
  • Two exhausted children
  • A mother who stands strong through sheer willpower

« Do you need any help? » he asked in a calm voice.

As a reflex, Adriana took a step back, bringing her children closer.

— Thank you, sir. We’re just waiting for the bus.

The man glanced at the empty road, then at the suitcases, and back at his face.

« No buses have been passing through here for three days, » he replied. « The route has been cancelled. The company has gone bankrupt. »

The ground seemed to give way beneath Adriana’s feet. The information hit her, heavy and cold.

« What do you mean…? » Her voice trembled. She looked at Mateo and Lucía, who were staring at her with that childlike trust that is both warming and crushing. « I… I didn’t know. »

He opened the car door and got out. Tall, in his forties, with neatly trimmed hair and a calm demeanor. He didn’t need to raise his voice to command respect.

« My name is Alejandro Villarreal, » he said, extending his hand.

Adriana hesitated for a second, then hugged her.

— Adriana Montes. And here are Mateo and Lucía.
