It started with passive-aggressive messages.
« Thanks for ruining dinner. I hope you’re glad you let your own sister down. »
Since I didn’t respond, the attempts to make me feel guilty began.
« Are you really going to leave me like this after everything I’ve been through? »
I ignored all the messages.
If she wanted to play the victim, she could have done it without me.
Then my parents intervened.
My mother called first, her voice filled with disappointment.
« I don’t know what’s gotten into you, » she said. « Lauren needs your help. She’s your sister. »
« She’s been financially dependent on me for years, » I retorted. « It’s time she grew up and took care of herself. »
My father wasn’t any better.
He called back later that day and said:
« You’re being selfish. You’re punishing her for no reason. What’s she going to do now? »
« Get yourself a job, » I said bluntly. « Like the rest of us. »
The worst happened later in the week when I received a call from Lauren’s landlord.
Apparently, she told him that I was the one paying his rent, and when the payment didn’t go through, he came directly to see me.
« That’s no longer my problem, » I told him. « It’s up to you to talk to him. »
This conversation must have served as a wake-up call for Lauren, because a few days later, she showed up at my apartment unannounced.
She looked disheveled and panicked.
Far from the self-assured and entitled person I was used to seeing.
« You can’t just interrupt me like that, » she said as soon as I opened the door.
« Yes, I can, » I replied, leaning against the door frame.
Lauren stood there, shifting from one foot to the other like a child caught in a lie.
She wasn’t used to hearing no from me — or from anyone else for that matter.
« You don’t understand, » she began, her voice thick with despair. « If you don’t help me, I’m going to lose my apartment. I can’t just go back to my parents’ house. They don’t have room for me anymore. »
« That’s not my problem, » I replied curtly.
His jaw dropped.
« Is that none of your problem? You’re my brother… »
“And for years, I was so much more than that,” I replied, stepping forward. “I was your safety net, your bank, your excuse to avoid growing up. I worked two jobs so you could live your dream, and the one time I asked for respect, you called me incompetent. So no, Lauren. It’s not my problem anymore.”
She blinked, as if she didn’t believe what she was hearing.
« I didn’t mean to say it like that, » she stammered. « I was overwhelmed and I didn’t think. »
« You never think about anything, » I retorted. « You never think about anyone but yourself. You used me. You used Mom and Dad. And now you’re panicking because you finally have to face the consequences. »
Then she started to cry.
Big, theatrical sobs that could have worked on someone else.
But I no longer believed it.
« You’re not going to change my mind by making me feel guilty, » I said. « You have to manage on your own. Find a job. Manage your budget. Do what needs to be done. But leave me out of it. »
He did not like this answer.
« You’re cruel, » she snapped, wiping away her tears. « You’re supposed to help the family. That’s what a family does. »
« No, » I said firmly. « Family supports each other. We don’t exploit each other while pretending to be in love. And until you understand that, don’t bother coming back here. »
I closed the door, cutting short the excuse she was about to invent.
For the first time, I felt like I was taking back control of my life.
After slamming the door in Lauren’s face, I prepared myself for the consequences.
She wasn’t the type to suffer in silence, and I knew she would try to make it a tearjerker for our parents.
And indeed, they called me the next day, furious.
Mom started with her usual guilt-tripping speech.
« How could you do this to your sister? » she cried. « She’s going through a difficult time and you abandoned her when she needed you most. »
I didn’t hold back.
« Having difficulties? She’s been living off me for years while acting like she’s the queen of the world. Maybe it’s time she learned what it’s like to struggle. »
My father then added fuel to the fire, accusing me of being heartless and ungrateful for everything they had done for me.
This passage made me laugh.
« Ungrateful? » I said. « You’re joking, I hope? I financed Lauren’s lifestyle while you watched her act like she was the next big star. Meanwhile, I worked myself to the bone to ensure her comfort. »
The more I explained it to them, the calmer they became.
At the end of the call, they had nothing more to say except that I was destroying the family.
As for Lauren, her meltdown was spectacular.
She flooded her social media with vague messages explaining that some people only care about themselves and that you are disappointed by your loved ones.
She even had the audacity to launch a GoFundMe campaign to pay her rent, claiming she had been caught off guard by an unexpected expense.
His friends commented with feigned concern, asking if there was anything they could do to help him.
But the donations arrived only in dribs and drabs.
Apparently, people weren’t as enthusiastic about supporting her lifestyle as she had hoped.
Meanwhile, news of the tragedy spread like wildfire through the family.
My aunt called to say she had heard I was being unreasonable, but after I explained the situation to her, she quickly changed her mind.
« Did she really expect you to keep paying her rent? » she asked incredulously.
« Welcome to my world, » I replied.
