Tyler played with his new toy trucks, unaware of the legal battle brewing around him.
Emma helped Melissa prepare dinner, and the two women discussed normal things like school and upcoming movies.
I expected the worst to happen — that Kevin or his father would find a way to hurt us — but Miss Drummond had been meticulous.
The restraining order was already in effect. Any contact from them would result in immediate legal action.
On the evening of December 26, Emma’s phone vibrated: a message was coming from an unknown number.
She showed it to me immediately.
It came from Vanessa.
I’m leaving, Nathan. My lawyer told me, « Your evidence against the family is also useful to my defense. Thank you for having the courage to leave. I should have done it years ago. »
Emma simply replied:
« Good luck. »
We later learned that Vanessa had been documenting Nathan’s behavior for years: his drinking problem, his verbal abuse, his financial irresponsibility.
She would stay because divorcing and joining the Harris family meant facing their army of lawyers and their unlimited resources.
But with the family’s reputation in tatters and Gregory torn between his own divorce and the custody battle for Kevin, Vanessa saw an opportunity.
She filed for divorce on December 27th, the same day as our custody hearing.
His timing was both strategic and brutal.
Gregory could not finance legal teams for three simultaneous battles while managing the media nightmare his family had become.
The custody hearing lasted 6 hours.
Kevin’s lawyer, a sharp-dressed man named Martin Pierce, explored every possible avenue.
He argued that the videos had been taken out of context. He claimed that Kevin’s whispered words had been misunderstood. He suggested that Tyler’s allergic reaction was accidental and that everyone had simply frozen in shock.
Next, Miss Drummond showed Emma’s videos.
An absolute silence fell over the courtroom during the scene of Tyler being strangled.
You could hear every labored breath, every desperate gasp.
You could see Kevin’s hand gripping my wrist.
You could hear his exact words, perfectly clear.
Let him choke and die. We can try again with a better one.
The judge’s expression shifted from professional neutrality to barely contained fury.
Kevin’s lawyer broke off mid-sentence when Gregor’s voice boomed through the loudspeakers.
Natural selection at work.
When Vanessa’s comment about some children just not being cut out for it was broadcast, I saw one of the court reporters wipe away her tears.
Her bare jaw was so tightly clenched that I could see her muscles contracting.
Martin Pierce attempted to recover.
« Your Honor, my client was in shock. In crisis situations, people sometimes say things they don’t mean. »
“Counsel,” the judge interrupted, “I have been serving for 19 years. I have heard every excuse, every justification, every possible rationalization to explain parental failure. What I have just witnessed horrified me. It was a premeditated indifference to a child’s suffering. This man ordered his wife to let their son die. His entire family witnessed the scene and encouraged her. A 12-year-old child was the only person present in the room to act to save a life.”
PICE tried again.
« The grandmother claims she was unaware of the allergy. »
« According to the wife’s testimony, she was informed at least 20 times, which I cannot dispute given the evidence I have seen today. This court finds credible evidence of child endangerment, failure to protect, and conspiracy to harm. I grant sole legal and physical custody to the mother with immediate effect. »
Kevin gets up.
« Your Honor, you cannot— »
“Please sit down, Mr. Harris,” the judge ordered coldly. “I can and will seat you. You will only be allowed supervised visits, two hours per month, subject to the successful completion of a full psychological evaluation and a parenting course. You will pay $4,000 a month in child support. You will be responsible for all of Tyler’s medical expenses, including his allergy treatments and any therapy the two children may require as a result of this trauma. You are prohibited from having any contact with the children outside of the authorized supervised visits. Any violation of these conditions will result in the immediate suspension of all your parental rights. Is that clear?”
« Yes, Your Honor, » replied PICE on behalf of his astonished client.
« As for the other family members present during this incident, » the judge continued, « I am issuing restraining orders against Judith Harris, Gregory Harris, Nathan Harris, and Vanessa Harris. They are strictly prohibited from having any contact with these children. This court finds their behavior reprehensible and their judgment severely impaired. »
Pierce seized the opportunity.
« Your Honor, Vanessa Harris has filed for divorce against Nathan Harris and has offered to testify. »
“I don’t care,” the judge interrupted. “She sat there watching a three-year-old child suffocate, all while spouting off about natural selection. Whatever her marital problems, she has proven that she cannot be trusted around children. The restraining order stands.”
Vanessa’s calculation, which was to use our case to facilitate her divorce, backfired on her.
She would finally be rid of Nathan, but she would also have lost any chance of being considered one of the good people.
The judge had seen through his opportunism.
The hearing concluded with Ms. Drummond presenting a detailed statement of Kevin’s assets for the purpose of calculating child support.
Kevin’s face gradually paled as his income, investments, and trust fund distributions were made public.
The custody hearing went exactly as Miss Drummond had predicted.
Emma’s videos were shown in the courtroom.
Kevin’s voice whispering those terrible words.
Judith laughed while Tyler choked.
Gregory’s casual disregard for his grandson’s life.
Nathan is filming instead of helping.
The judge’s face spoke volumes.
Kevin was granted supervised visitation rights only, pending a psychological evaluation.
Restraining orders have been issued against Judith, Gregory and Nathan.
Vanessa received a temporary six-month restraining order with the possibility of supervised contact.
After therapy, I was granted full legal and physical custody, as well as child support, and Kevin is required to cover all of Tyler’s medical expenses.
The divorce was finalized in March.
Kevin’s lawyer tried to fight it, but the evidence was overwhelming.
The judge added additional stipulations.
Kevin had to take parenting classes and therapy before any unsupervised visits could be considered.
Given his behavior during the hearing, and in particular his attempt to justify his actions, these visits seemed unlikely for years.
The real spectacle came from Gregory and Judith’s divorce.
It turned out that Derrick, the tennis instructor, was not Judith’s only lover.
Emma’s investigation had only scratched the surface of the subject.
Gregory’s lawyers have uncovered three other relationships spanning the past five years.
This settlement cost Judith almost everything: her house, most of her jewelry, her car, her social status.
The divorce proceedings became a spectacle in their social circle.
Gregory’s lawyer obtained, by way of subpoena, hotel records, credit card statements, and telephone logs that painted a damning picture of Judith’s extramarital activities.
She had been having an affair for almost three years with a personal trainer from her gym.
Another involved a gallery owner she had met at a charity auction.
The tennis instructor, Derek, was actually the latest in a long line of young men whom Judith had courted, while Gregory worked 70 hours a week building his business empire.
Gregory’s pride took a hit, but his ruthless business instincts prevailed.
