Part 2: The parking lot of the shelter felt like a battlefield

The parking lot of the shelter felt like a battlefield. Ashley stood there in her designer clothes, looking every bit the polished professional I had fallen for after the divorce. Her attorneys flanked her like bodyguards, briefcases in hand, their expressions smug and prepared.

“Michael, darling,” Ashley cooed, stepping forward. “I see you’ve been busy playing detective. How touching.”

Emily instinctively pulled the twins closer to her chest, her body tensing. I moved between them protectively, my mind reeling from the revelations of the past few days.

“What the hell are you doing here, Ashley?” I demanded, anger surging through me.

One of the attorneys cleared his throat and handed me a thick envelope. “Mr. Carter, these are legal documents. Ms. Bennett has filed for emergency custody of the minor children, citing your history of emotional abuse toward their mother and your abandonment during the pregnancy.”

I stared at the papers in disbelief. “Abandonment? You’re the one who hid her pregnancy! You destroyed our marriage with lies!”

Ashley laughed softly. “Oh, Michael. Always so quick to blame others. The truth is, Emily was unstable. She cheated, stole from you, and when you kicked her out—rightfully so—she spiraled. Those babies deserve stability. With me. Their father’s fiancée.”

The twins began to fuss, sensing the tension. Emily’s eyes flashed with quiet fury, but she remained silent, conserving her energy.

I turned to her. “Emily, please. Tell me what happened. I’ll fix this—I swear.”

She hesitated, then spoke in a voice hoarse from exhaustion. “After you threw me out, I had nowhere to go. I found out I was pregnant two weeks later. I tried calling you every day. I went to your office, but security turned me away. Letters came back undelivered. When I went into early labor, I listed you because… because I still believed you’d come for us.”

Her words shattered me. While I was proposing to Ashley, Emily was alone in a county hospital, giving birth to twins with complications that left her weak and unable to work.

David’s deeper investigation, which he continued sharing over the next 48 hours, revealed even more horrors. Ashley’s family had connections in the hospital administration. They had paid off staff and altered records. Ashley had been monitoring Emily’s life through a private investigator of her own, ensuring she stayed broken and silent.
